Moscow, 1 March 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin today nominated Mikhail Fradkov to post of the country's new prime minister.
Fradkov is a former tax police chief who is currently Russia's envoy to the European Union.
Russia's State Duma, the lower house of parliament, will formally consider Fradkov's candidacy on 5 March, Interfax quoted Duma speaker Boris Gryzlov as saying.
Fradkov, 53, is Putin's choice to succeed Mikhail Kasyanov, who was sacked last week. It is largely suspected that the Duma, which has a majority made up of pro-Putin deputies, will approve Fradkov for the post.
