12 May 2004 -- Lithuanian police today said they will work with their Russian counterparts to investigate how a Lithuanian border guard was attacked on a train traveling from Russia's Kaliningrad exclave to the rest of Russia via Lithuania.
Lithuania's acting President Arturas Paulauskas said the investigation will cover every angle of how a female Lithuanian border guard was beaten on the train, her wrist slashed and then left unconscious en route to Russia.
She was found unconscious when the train arrived in Russia and was taken to a hospital where she was in stable condition.
Police said her assailants used her blood to scrawl "Lithuania for Russians" on the wall of the train.
After she was found, the train was halted but none of the nearly 330 passengers was detained.
