27 May 2004 -- Reports say gunmen today ambushed a convoy carrying Salama al-Khafaji, a member of the Iraqi Governing Council as she was returning to Baghdad from mediation efforts in Al-Najaf.
Al-Khafaji survived but three bodyguards were reportedly killed.
Aide Rasoul Talib said al-Khafaji was in a three-vehicle convoy that came under fire tonight in the town of Yusufiyah.
Later, council member Mahmud Uthman confirmed al-Khafaji survived the ambush.
Al-Khafaji is one of three women on the Governing Council. She replaced another Shi'ite woman member, Aquila al-Hashimi, who was killed in September.
Al-Khafaji was among several Shi'ite council members who traveled to Al-Najaf to mediate a deal to stop the fighting between U.S. soldiers and Shi'ite militiamen loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
