31 May 2004 -- Disagreement remains between the Iraqi Governing Council and the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority over the choice of a candidate for Iraq's interim president after the transfer of power scheduled to take place in one month.
The two main contenders are reportedly Sunni leaders Adnan Pachachi and Ghazi al-Yawar, although other names were still being mentioned today.
So far, the only agreed officials in the Iraqi government that will take over from the U.S.-led coalition authority after 30 June are Iyad Allawi as prime minister and current foreign, interior, and defense ministers.
U.S. General Richard Myers said talks are being held between the U.S.-led coalition, the United Nations, and Iraqis over how much power Iraqi authorities will have over U.S. military operations in Iraq following the handover of power.
While those debates continued a car exploded in Baghdad killing two people and leaving some 20 others injured.
In addition, one coalition soldier was reported killed and another wounded by a homemade bomb in southeast Baghdad.
