Countries Welcome Iraq's New Interim Government

2 June 2004 -- France, Spain, China, Germany, and Russia say the draft resolution on the future of Iraq, submitted to the United Nations Security Council last night, provides a good basis but needs improvement.
France wants a confirmation of the full sovereignty of the Iraqi government, notably in military affairs. Spain and China want a final date for the withdrawal of foreign troops to be firmly set.

Germany and Russia agree that changes are required.

More states and organisations today welcomed the appointment yesterday of an Iraqi interim government. UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has urged Iraqis to accept the government and help it prepare for national elections.

In Iraq, two car bombs in the capital Baghdad killed at least five Iraqis and renewed clashes between Shi'ite Muslim militiamen and U.S. forces left nine people dead.
