Washington, 8 June 2004 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. President George W. Bush and other leaders of industrialized states will begin meeting in the United States today to discuss global economic and security issues.
Leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Russia will join Bush on Georgia's Sea Island for the annual Group of Eight summit.
Bush has said the three-day meeting will provide a platform for demonstrating international cooperation.
The president said he hopes the summit will result in a commitment to work together to help Iraq become a free, peaceful, and democratic country.
Key discussions are also expected to include oil prices, the Middle East peace initiative, a push for a greater commitment to addressing famine, as well as stemming the spread of AIDS in Africa and elsewhere.
