11 June 2004 -- The Polish-led multinational security force in central Iraq says one of its patrols came under attack today south of Baghdad.
A spokesman said the troops were patrolling near the city of Al-Hillah when they were attacked with rocket-propelled grenades shortly after midnight. The attackers fled after the patrol returned fire.
There were reports of clashes between supporters of radical Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and U.S. forces today in Baghdad. One fighter was reported killed and several wounded in sporadic fighting in Al-Sadr City, a Shi'a neighbourhood.
Also today, the U.S. military said U.S. soldiers have foiled a new sabotage attempt against a pipeline in northern Iraq.
Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi yesterday said that Iraq lost more than $200 million over the past seven months due to separate attacks on its pipeline network.
