13 June 2004 -- A Turk and an Egyptian taken hostage in Iraq were released today.
News agencies are quoting an unnamed mediator as saying the two were released. The mediator gave no other details.
Turkish and Egyptian officials have not confirmed the release.
A wave of kidnappings began sweeping through Iraq in April when U.S. forces launched an operation in the town of Al-Fallujah and a radical Shi'a cleric, Muqtada al-Sadr, raised an armed revolt against the U.S.-led coalition in central and southern Iraq.
Since then, dozens of foreigners have been taken hostage in Iraq. Some have been released or rescued. Some have been executed.
