Attacks Kill At Least 85 In Iraq

24 June 2004 -- Iraq's Health Ministry says at least 85 people have been killed and some 320 injured in a series of coordinated attacks across the central and northern parts of the country today.
The ministry today said more than 40 people were killed and some 200 injured in a series of car bomb explosions in the northern city of Mosul.

Fierce fighting was reported in Ba'quba where insurgents staged dawn raids that killed 17 Iraqis and two U.S. soldiers.

The Arabic television channel Al-Jazeera showed footage of hooded fighters in Baquba who claimed they were followers of Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian-born militant with suspected ties to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network.

A U.S. helicopter made an emergency landing near Al-Fallujah, west of Baghdad, but the crew suffered no casualties. The U.S. military has not commented on the cause of the incident.

Violence was also reported in the cities of Al-Ramadi and Baghdad.
