Turkish Official Blames Left-Wing Culprits For Bombing

24 June 2004 -- The governor of Istanbul said today that an underground left-wing group might be behind a bus bombing that killed three people today in that city.
Muammer Guler said there is a high possibility that an illegal organization with what he described as a "Marxist inclination" is responsible for the explosion.

Guler said the bus and its passengers evidently were not the target of the group, adding that the bomb was being transported when it detonated.

In another incident, Turkish police defused a time bomb today in the northwestern city of Yalova. It had been placed in a bag outside a car shop on the outskirts of the city.

Earlier today, a small parcel bomb exploded in the capital Ankara.

NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said he remains confident in security measures for a NATO summit scheduled in Istanbul for 28-29 June.
