28 June 2004 -- Russian authorities claimed today that federal forces have killed one of those responsible for planning the 21-22 June attacks in the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia that killed nearly 100 people.
Russian Deputy Prosecutor-General Sergei Fridinskii told journalists that federal forces killed 25-year-old Magomed Yevloyev during a special operation near the Ingush village of Dalakovo. Fridinskii said Yevloyev was fatally wounded when he tried to resist arrest.
Yevloyev and Doki Umarov were Russia's primary suspects in the coordinated overnight attacks in Ingushetia that targeted mainly law-enforcement officials in the republic.
Fridinskii said some 200 fighters took part in the attacks and that residents of Ingushetia were among them.
Fridinskii said 10 people have been detained in connection with the attacks, three of whom have been charged with terrorism.
