1 July 2004 -- Members of Mongolia's opposition Motherland Democratic Party (MDC) briefly took over state television today demanding on air that the results of the 27 June elections be recognized.
Protesters succeeded in getting into the state television building on the edge of the capital Ulan Bator. One of the party's leaders, Oyun, spoke on television saying, "We have not expressed our views on TV during the past four years. The time has come to do it now."
The opposition complained it did not have access to state television in the run-up to the national elections.
Preliminary figures show the MDC and ruling Mongolian People's Democratic Party are even, but there are three run-off elections scheduled for 3 July.
MDC members left the state television building after their broadcast and told protesters to go home.
