2 July 2004 -- Clashes were reported today in Afghanistan's central Uruzgan province, one day after the United Nations said national elections planned for September will likely be delayed.
U.S. and Afghan government troops fought a gun battle with Taliban loyalists near the town of Daychopan, killing five and capturing seven, according to U.S. spokesman Rick Peat.
The mountainous area has been the scene of frequent clashes with Taliban loyalists.
Meanwhile, three Afghan civilians were killed in an assault on a government office in Deh Rawood that has been blamed on the Taliban. The insurgents used rocket-propelled grenades, rifles, and machine guns to attack the building. The perpetrators fled after the attack.
