2 July 2004 -- The U.S. military said today that three soldiers have been charged in the drowning death of an Iraqi man.
The man was forced to jump off a bridge into the Tigris River north of Baghdad in January. A fourth U.S. soldier faces charges for allegedly ordering a second Iraqi man to jump. He survived.
Meanwhile, a British soldier will stand trial over the shooting of a 13-year-old Iraqi boy in September 2003. A date for the trial was not revealed. The British Defense Ministry has declined to provide further details on the incident, except to say the boy was not killed.
In Iraq today, two U.S. Marines died. One was killed while conducting "security and stability" operations in Al-Anbar Province. Another died from wounds received yesterday near Al-Fallujah.
Insurgents also released two Turkish hostages after the company employing the men reportedly promised to stop working with the U.S. military. A Pakistani driver being held by militants was also freed.
Earlier, insurgents fired rockets at two central Baghdad hotels used by foreigners. No casualties were reported.
