Russian Prosecutor To Probe Editor's Slaying

12 July 2004 -- A Russian official says a special crimes unit will investigate the killing of the American editor of "Forbes" magazine's Russian edition.
Viktor Potapov, a spokesman for Russian Prosecutor-General Vladimir Ustinov today said Ustinov has ordered a special investigative branch of his office to conduct the probe into the death of Paul Klebnikov, a U.S. citizen of Russian heritage.

Klebnikov was gunned down outside the magazine's offices in Moscow on Friday.

"Forbes" started its Russian-language edition in April.

Klebnikov was known for his hard-hitting, investigative style of journalism. He had authored a book describing how Boris Berezovskii -- now living in exile in Britain -- allegedly siphoned hundreds of millions of dollars out of Russia.

In May, "Forbes" also published a list of Russia's 100 richest people.
