12 July 2004 -- The United Nations has picked Pakistan's ambassador to the United States to be the new head of the UN mission in Iraq.
The UN announced today that Ashraf Jehangir Qazi will take the position, which has been vacant since Sergio Vieira de Mello was killed in a bomb attack at the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad last August.
Qazi has been ambassador to the United States since September 2002. He previously served as Pakistan's envoy to China, India, Russia, and Syria.
