Taliban Fighters Attack Afghan District Office

21 August 2004 -- An Afghan security official says about 80 suspected Taliban fighters attacked a district head's office in southern Afghanistan early today, leaving at least three dead.
The attack in Kandahar Province's Miana Shien district lasted for about two hours.

District head Shadi Khan said that a government soldier and two Taliban fighters were killed and two soldiers and two Taliban were wounded. Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi was quoted as denying there had been any Taliban casualties.

Miana Shien borders mountainous Day Chopan district in Zabul Province, a scene of clashes over the past year between Taliban rebels and forces of the U.S.-led coalition.

The Afghan government is struggling to maintain security ahead of national elections slated for 9 October.
