28 August 2004 -- Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said today Tehran is ready to provide "guarantees" that it won't seek nuclear weapons.
Khatami said at a press conference in Tehran that Iran would do "everything necessary" to give guarantees that it won't seek to develop nuclear weapons.
Khatami did not elaborate on the kinds of guarantees his country was willing to give. Iran has agreed to international inspections of its nuclear facilities and military sites, but remains under close scrutiny amid concern over its nuclear program.
Khatami also warned the United States it needs Iranian help with Iraq and Afghanistan, both of which share borders with Iran.
