U.S. military spokeswoman Master Sergeant Ann Bennett says the people killed by the explosion yesterday include five teenagers, four younger children, and one adult.
She said it is unclear what caused the blast, which occurred yesterday evening near Zormat, about 130 kilometers south of the capital, Kabul, in Paktia Province.
And there was another powerful explosion in the capital Kabul today, but there was no immediate report of any casualties.
