8 September 2004 -- Iran's nuclear chief today acknowledged that Tehran is having talks with European officials concerning a possible freeze on some of Iran's nuclear activities.
But Supreme National Security Council Secretary Hojatoleslam Hassan Rohani said it is still too early to talk about the negotiations.
Speaking yesterday after initial reports concerning the negotiations, U.S. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Washington is skeptical about any promises that Iran might make about its nuclear activities.
"You don't have to look back too far to find Iranian officials saying that they were going to suspend production of centrifuge and use of centrifuges, and then to find them saying that no, they were going to go ahead anyway," he said.
Later the same day, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Tehran's nuclear ambitions should go to the UN Security Council for possible punitive action against Iran.
In Germany today, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told parliament that he is concerned about Iran's nuclear program.
Washington maintains that Iran is covertly trying to develop nuclear arms. Tehran denies the charge.
