11 September 2004 -- A U.S. military judge in Iraq has sentenced a U.S. Army intelligence analyst to eight months in prison for mistreating inmates at Abu Ghurayb prison.
Specialist Armin Cruz is the eighth person indicted and the first military intelligence soldier to be prosecuted in the scandal that has so far focused on prison guard reservists.
Cruz, who pleaded guilty to shortly before being sentenced in Baghdad today, also was reduced in rank and given a bad conduct discharge.
A spokesman for the military in Iraq said Cruz is accused of forcing naked prisoners to crawl along the floor and later handcuffing the men together. As an analyst, he was not supposed to be involved in interrogations of prisoners.
