11 September 2004 -- On the third anniversary of the 11 September 2001 terror attacks in the United States, the U.S. military said support for the ousted Taliban regime is waning.
U.S. Army Major Scott Nelson said today in a news briefing today that negotiations are going on between the Afghan government and Taliban and Hezb-e-Islami commanders about a cease-fire.
But the operational commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan -- Major General Eric Olson -- told AP today that Al-Qaeda leaders are still directing attacks through operatives in the country.
The United States blamed Al-Qaeda for the 9/11 attacks and then invaded Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban that had given the network sanctuary.
Also today, one month before the presidential election, Afghan Interim Administration Chairman Hamid Karzai said if voters keep him in office he will crack down on factional fighting between warlords and make national security a priority.
