17 September 2004 -- Police in Iraq say a suicide car bomb struck a police car patrolling a commercial district in central Baghdad today, resulting in at least five deaths.
The Health Ministry says policemen are among some 20 people also injured in the blast.
Elsewhere in Baghdad today, a U.S. military spokesman, Major Philip Smith, said U.S. troops battled with insurgents after an explosives-rigged car tried to ram a checkpoint.
In central Iraq, the U.S. military said U.S. warplanes fired at suspected hideouts of militants in and around the Sunni insurgent stronghold of Al-Fallujah.
The military said in a statement the target was a cluster of houses believed to be used by members of a militant group led by Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, who is suspected of having links with the Al-Qaeda terrorist network.
