25 September 2004 -- At least 21 people, including four U.S. soldiers, were killed today in fighting between U.S. forces and Islamic militants in Al-Fallujah, Anbar Province, and in the center of the capital Baghdad.
The U.S. military said its attacks targeted supporters of a militant group led by Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi.
Also today, an Islamic Internet site claimed that British hostage Kenneth Bigley has been killed in Iraq. But a British Foreign Ministry spokesman said the site is unreliable and, for now, is not taking the claim "too seriously."
Prominent British Muslims arrived in Kuwait today en route to Baghdad to plead for Bigley's release.
U.S. President George W. Bush said today that Washington will increase spending on reconstruction in Iraq, despite the ongoing violence.
