26 September 2004 -- Russian authorities said today that unidentified gunmen shot and killed a senior police official as he returned home from work in the southern Russian region of Daghestan.
Abdul Musaev, a spokesman for Daghestan's Interior Ministry, said two gunmen carrying submachine guns fired on Magomed Gadzhimagomedov, who headed a regional branch of the Interior Ministry's criminal-investigation division, outside the entrance to his home last night in Buinaksk.
Gadzhimagomedov was returning home from his office in Buinaksk, about 30 kilometers southwest of the regional capital Makhachkala.
Daghestan, an ethnically diverse region that borders Chechnya, has been plagued by violence including bombings and shootings, many of which have been blamed on Islamic militants.
