29 September 2004 -- Afghan police said Taliban militants attacked an Afghan government office early this morning and launched a gun battle that left four attackers and three Afghan troops dead.
Deputy police chief Jailani Khan said that the mayor's office in Khaki Afghan, a district of southeastern Zabul Province, was targeted by militants armed with automatic weapons and rifles.
He said that in four hours of fighting, four Taliban were killed and two more captured along with their weapons. Three Afghan soldiers died and two were wounded.
In the capital Kabul, the U.S. military said today that U.S.-led forces are stepping up efforts to improve security before next month's election, focusing on the south and southeast where militants have been most active.
