1 October 2004 -- Moscow police chief Vladimir Pronin told a news conference today that several senior city police officials have been fired in connection with the death of a man detained on suspicion of terrorism.
Moscow police detained Aleksandr Pumane on 18 September after finding two land mines, electronic detonators, and TNT in his car.
Police said Pumane was under the influence of drugs and told investigators he was simply given money to drive the car with explosives to a place in Moscow. The 38-year-old man was found dead shortly after his arrest. He died after apparently being beaten, although police originally said he suffered a fatal heart attack.
Police chief Pronin said mistakes were made by police at all levels in dealing with Pumane. Pronin said those responsible for quote "clearly exceeding their authority" had been fired already.
