2 October 2004 -- A relative calm was reported in the Iraqi town of Samarra today, one day after U.S. and Iraqi forces battling insurgents secured control of important municipal and police buildings in the town.
The U.S. military and Iraqi officials said at least 100 insurgents were killed, and another 37 captured in the operation that started early yesterday.
In Al-Fallujah, another rebel stronghold, U.S. aircraft again targeted a suspected militants' hideout. An Al-Fallujah doctor told AFP that women and children were among the victims of the air strike that flattened two houses late yesterday.
A car bomb exploded near a U.S. military convoy outside Al-Fallujah today. There were no immediate reports of casualties from the blast near the town of Karmah.
Also today, U.S. forces clashed with insurgents in Baghdad's Shi'ite district of Al-Sadr City. A hospital director said 12 Iraqis were killed and 11 wounded.
