7 October 2004 -- Efforts are continuing in Sukhum today to resolve an election crisis in Georgia's separatist Abkhazia region.
Talks are planned between the main presidential candidates and the region's newly appointed prime minister, Nodar Khashba.
The 3 October presidential election ended in confusion, with opposition candidate Sergei Bagapsh declaring victory and his main rival, then Prime Minister Raul Khadjimba, claiming widespread fraud.
Yesterday, the Central Election Commission scrapped results from the Gali district and ordered a repeat vote there -- a move that critics said violates the law.
Abkhaz President Vladislav Ardzinba late yesterday dismissed Khadjimba as prime minister and named Khashba, a former mayor of Sukhum, as his replacement.
