17 November 2004 -- Long-time British-Iraqi aid worker Margaret Hassan has apparently been executed by kidnappers who had held her for nearly a month in Iraq.
The Arabic television network Al-Jazeera has said it has received a videotape, which it says shows "an armed man shooting at a blindfolded woman who appears to be Margaret Hassan." The network said it will not broadcast the video.
Hassan's husband, Tahsin Hassan, told Reuters news agency that he hopes the kidnappers will release her body so she can be properly buried.
"I need her. I need her back to rest in peace," Tahsin Hassan said. "Margaret lived with me in Iraq for 30 years. She dedicated her life to serving the Iraqi people. Please now, please return her to me."
Hassan, age 59, was director in Iraq for the international aid organization CARE. She had been seen in several videos pleading for her life since she was kidnapped in Baghdad on 19 October.
