28 November 2004 -- Two explosions occurred at the headquarters of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev's ruling Otan (Fatherland) party in the center of Almaty today.
Reuters quoted Aleksandr Pavlov, an Otan party deputy chairman, as confirming the explosions.
Interfax quoted an unnamed police officer as saying one person was wounded in the blasts. After the incident, senior Otan party member Bolatkhan Taizhan spoke of the need to preserve stability in the country:
"Despite differences in their views, all parties (in Kazakhstan) say that the main thing is to maintain stability in Kazakhstan, to act in accordance with the law," Taizhan said. "This is what leadership and members of opposition parties say, as well. That's why I think the blasts could be acts of accident. But one shouldn't be surprise if it's act of extremists."
Reports say police sealed have off the area and that the building has been surrounded by ambulances and fire engines.
