12 December 2004 -- A U.S. soldier was killed in a roadside-bomb attack in Baghdad today in fresh violence in Iraq.
North of the capital, unknown gunmen killed an Iraqi policeman. Also today, a car bomb exploded in the northern Iraqi town of Irbil. There was no immediate word on casualties.
The attacks are part of an ongoing antioccupation insurgency in the country.
U.S. soldiers and Iraqi police yesterday detained more than 50 Iraqis and seized weapons in several raids targeting insurgents in the Ba'qubah area, north of Baghdad.
