13 December 2004 -- European and Iranian leaders say they have made progress in their talks about Iran's controversial nuclear activities.
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said after the meeting today with Hassan Rowhani, Iran's top nuclear negotiator, that all parties "are now able to move forward to a next phase." Straw talked of "a longer-term arrangement to provide objective guarantees that Iran's nuclear program can only be used for civilian purposes."
Rowhani said the talks in Brussels will lead to a "new chapter" in relations between Iran and Europe if all sides pursue negotiations "in good faith."
There were no immediate details of the talks, but they had been expected to focus on a deal in which the European Union would give Iran economic and technology benefits if Iran suspends uranium enrichment -- a process that could be used to make nuclear weapons.
