6 January 2005 -- Thirty five journalists have resigned from one of the main Romanian dailies "Evenimentul Zilei," in protest against editorial changes planned by Swiss group Ringier.
The group bought the newspaper last April.
The move was the latest in a series of protests that started late last year against what journalists describe as the Swiss group's plan to "soften the newspaper's critical tone."
The paper was very critical against the Social Democrats, who ruled Romania until November 2004 elections and are now in the opposition.
The journalists concerned said in a statement they had also resigned in solidarity with former editor in chief, Dan Cristian Turturica, who was fired last week by Ringier.
"Evenimentul Zilei," founded in 1992, is one of the most popular newspapers in Romania, with a daily print run of 100,000 copies.
