12 January 2005 -- The United States has ended the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq without finding any.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said today there is no longer an active search for the lethal weapons.
U.S. President George W. Bush had cited the banned weapons as one of his chief justifications for going to war.
Some 1,200 military and intelligence specialists and support staff spent nearly two years searching military installations, factories, and laboratories where equipment and products might be converted quickly to making weapons.
Chief U.S. weapons hunter Charles Duelfer is to deliver his final report on the matter next month.
