Syrian President To Meet With Putin

25 January 2005 -- Syria's President Bashar al-Assad is in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin today.
Assad said before arriving in Moscow yesterday that his four-day visit will focus on fighting terrorism, the situation in Iraq, and the Middle East peace process.

Assad said Syrian acquisition of Russian missiles will not be on the agenda of his talks in Moscow.

Israeli and international media had reported that Russia plans to sell Syria missiles that could hit Israel. Israel and the United States have both warned against any such deal.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has denied that Russia is discussing a missile deal with Syria.
