United Nations, 26 January 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Georgian UN Ambassador Revaz Adamia says Russia blocked him from addressing the UN Security Council and is undermining the UN-brokered peace process over Abkhazia.
Adamia told a news conference at UN headquarters that Russia prevented him from briefing a closed session of the Council yesterday focusing on Abkhazia.
He revived Georgian charges that Russia has taken de facto control of the separatist province. Adamia had planned to raise the issue in the council.
"[The] truth is that by providing Russian citizenship [to Abkhaz], interfering unceremoniously and dictating its conditions, sending envoys without consulting with the Georgian authorities, illegally acquiring property and land by its physical and legal entities, Russia steps on the path of indirect annexation of Abkhazia," he said.
Russian mission spokesman Sergei Trepelkov told RFE/RL that Russia would study the charges and had no initial reaction. The council is due to vote on 28 January to extend the UN mission in Georgia another six months.
