Rice Warns Iran Of UN Sanctions

9 February 2005 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said today Iran should be warned that it faces referral to the UN Security Council, unless it accepts a European deal on its nuclear program.
In an interview with U.S. Fox News TV, Rice said Great Britain, France, and Germany had not made sufficiently clear to Iran the threat of UN sanctions.

The three EU nations and Iran began fresh talks yesterday on Western demands that Iran abandon uranium enrichment, a process that produces nuclear fuel, but could also be used in making weapons.

Rice arrived in Brussels today for talks with NATO and European Union officials, the latest stop on her first visit to Europe since she assumed the post.

In Paris on yesterday, she called for Europe and America to open a "new chapter" in their relationship after divisions over Iraq and other issues.
