Serbian President Chides UN Over Role In Kosovo

Serbian President Boris Tadic (file photo) 14 February 2005 -- Serbian President Boris Tadic today criticized the United Nations' role in Kosovo as he continued his trip to the UN-administered province.
Speaking in the Serbian enclave of Orahovac, Tadic said the situation of Kosovo's ethnic Serbian minority makes a mockery of the "European values" espoused by Kosovo's UN administrators.

He called on the UN to help resolve the problems facing Serbs and other non-Albanians in Kosovo.

Ethnic tensions remain high in Kosovo -- a UN protectorate since 1999, when NATO air strikes ended a Serbian crackdown on independence-seeking ethnic Albanians.

Last March saw UN peacekeepers fail to stop mobs of ethnic Albanians from rioting in Serbian towns and villages, torching homes and churches as they went. The riots left 19 people dead and forced some 4,000 people, mainly Serbs, to flee their homes.
