16 February 2005 -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko said today her government plans to review around 3,000 privatization deals.
President Viktor Yushchenko has said he has no intention of revisiting all post-Soviet privatizations but has promised to look into some sell-offs to check that a fair price was paid and that they were legal.
Tymoshenko said the government and the prosecutor-general will try to resolve the issue.
"A precise plan of action will be worked out for each enterprise where the prosecutor's office has found violations, so all illegal actions concerning state property are stopped," she said. "And through courts, in an absolutely legitimate way, without violating the current law, we will return to the state what was put illegally into private hands, into hands that are not clean."
She said state property found to have been illegally privatized will be returned to the state.
Tymoshenko gave no further details about the 3,000 enterprises to be examined.
