Georgian President Visiting Moldova

2 March 2005 -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is scheduled to meet with Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and other political leaders in Chisnau today.
The visit comes four days ahead of Moldova's parliamentary elections. Saakashvili's spokeswoman, Alana Gagloeva, said the main aim of his visit is "to show solidarity with the people of Moldova in the struggle for independence."

Saakashvili led the Rose Revolution that ousted former President Eduard Shevardnadze after allegedly fraudulent elections in November 2003.

Gagloeva said Saakashvili is not supporting any particular candidate but will meet "representatives of various political forces of the country."

She said Saakashvili and Voronin will discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations within the framework of GUUAM, the organization which comprises Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and Moldova.
