23 March 2005 -- The U.S. and Iraqi military said today that Iraqi commandos killed 84 militants and seized a guerrilla training camp north of Baghdad in several hours of fighting.
Iraqi forces led the raid and called in U.S. air support. The Interior Ministry said that Arab and foreign fighters, including Sudanese, Algerians, Moroccans, and other nationalities, were among the dead. Iraqi Army Colonel Muhammad Ibrahim said at a U.S.-Iraqi joint command center in nearby Al-Tikrit that 12 commandos died in the battle. Other reports said that seven had been killed.
In separate action, Iraqi Colonel Ismail Ibrahim said that more than 200 Iraqi police and soldiers detained 12 insurgents in a pre-dawn raid today in southern Baquba, 60 km north of Baghdad. The military said that Iraqi security forces arrested more than 80 suspected insurgents in raids across northern Iraq in the last few days.
