UN Report: Lebanon, Syria Negligent In Hariri Death

The site after the bomb blast United Nations, 25 March 2005 (RFE/RL) -- A UN panel has found serious flaws with the investigation by Lebanese authorities into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.
The report, released late yesterday, does not blame any single source for the killing. But it says Lebanese security services and Syrian military intelligence in Lebanon bear responsibility for the lack of protection and law and order in the country.

The UN inquiry recommends an international independent investigation into the killing. The UN Security Council called for such a report after the killing of Hariri in Beirut last month. The attack sent off a chain of events that have hastened the removal of Syrian forces from Lebanon.
