26 March 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Bishkek was reportedly quiet today as Kyrgyzstan's new leadership sought to restore order following the ouster of President Askar Akaev two days ago.
No major incidents were reported during the night as police patrolled the city to prevent a repeat of looting the previous night. Late yesterday, police dispersed gangs of young men apparently seeking to enter businesses and public buildings.
One person trying to fight off looters was reported killed overnight.
Deputies of Kyrgyzstan's outgoing parliament were meeting today to discuss forming a provisional government.
Opposition leader Kurmanbek Bakiev -- who parliament has appointed interim president -- said yesterday that a new provisional government will lead the country to fresh elections within three months.
Akaev's government was ousted on 24 March following weeks of protests triggered by what the opposition says were fraudulent parliamentary elections last month.
