Former Iranian Police Chief To Run For President

11 April 2005 -- Iran's former national police chief, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, today said that he will run for president in an upcoming election.
Qalibaf made the announcement at a press conference in Tehran. He described himself to reporters as a "pragmatist," not a
rightist or a fundamentalist. He said he has no attachments to any of Iran's conventional political wings.

Qalibaf also said that he is willing to resume diplomatic ties with the United States, which were severed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

Qalibaf resigned as police chief earlier this month.

Iran is scheduled to hold presidential elections on 17 June to find a successor to President Mohammad Khatami, who is nearing the end of his final term in office.
