Former President Askar Akaev
Bishkek, 8 May 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's acting Prosecutor-General Azimbek Beknazarov toured houses yesterday that he says government agencies built illegally for ousted President Askar Akaev.
Beknazarov, who toured some of the properties with a group of journalists, said some state property was illegally given to some of Akaev's close associates.
"There are many such buildings. There is, for instance, a pension of the National Academy of Sciences. Some of its buildings had been given to such academicians as [former First Deputy Prime Minister] Kubanychbek Jumaliev and [former Kyrgyz Ambassador to Turkey] Amanbek Karpkulov," Beknazarov said.
The acting prosecutor said that authorities are investigating more than 20 companies acquired by Akaev and his family and associates.
In an earlier interview with RFE/RL, Akaev denied charges that he and his family illegally privatized and acquired some companies. Akaev said some of the buildings in question are rightfully his under a law governing the ex-president.
