Ukraine Pressing Forward With EU Bid

Ukrainian President Yushchenko (file photo) 7 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- President Viktor Yushchenko said today in Ankara that despite the turmoil the European Union is facing over its proposed constitution, Ukraine will press forward with its goal of EU membership.
Yushchenko was speaking on a visit to Turkey, another country aspiring to join the EU. His trip to Turkey comes on the heels of referendums in France and the Netherlands when voters in both nations rejected the charter.

Yushchenko, who met with Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer today, said that on the subject of joining the EU, the "two nations' political will is the same."

Yushchenko and Sezer signed cooperation agreements on energy, nuclear power, railways, law enforcement, and science and technology.

Yushchenko met with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday and is due to travel to Istanbul on 8 June for meetings with Turkish business leaders.
