Kabul, 14 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Afghan authorities say they have detected 30 cases of cholera among more than 2,500 instances of acute diarrhoea in the capital, Kabul.
Abdullah Fahim, an adviser to the Public Health Ministry, says the cholera cases were detected in the past three weeks. He says the government has taken immediate action to ensure water supplies were kept clean by chlorination.
Fahim says four deaths have been reported, one caused by diarrhoea and at least two of the others by cholera.
Fahim says the cases occurred sporadically in various parts of Kabul and that it is not considered to be an outbreak or a
public health problem.
The deputy head of the UNICEF information department in Kabul, Mohammad Rafi, spoke about the situation to RFE/RL by telephone from Kabul.
"As far as UNICEF knows, up until last Thursday, there were 30 confirmed cases of cholera in four hospitals in Kabul," Rafi said.
Abdi Momin, Kabul's medical officer for the United Nations' World Health Organization, says there appears no
cause for alarm.
He says that, as of 12 June, the Health Ministry has reported 2,578 cases of acute diarrhoea, some of which have been
confirmed to have been caused by cholera.
