Afghan Police Chief Detained Over Killings

15 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- An Afghan government spokesman says authorities have detained a local police chief for questioning over the killing one year ago of five international aid workers.
The workers were with the international medical relief agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders).

Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal told the AFP news agency that the police chief in Qadis district, in the northwestern province of Badghis, was detained last week. Mashal did not name detainee.

Three foreign and two Afghan aid workers were killed in an apparently targeted attack in Badgis in June last year. The attack was the worst on MSF in a quarter of a century work in Afghanistan.

The following month the Nobel prize-winning aid group pulled out of Afghanistan after 24 years, citing poor security and the government's failure to launch a "credible" investigation into the killings.
