G-8 Ministers To Discuss Terror, Trafficking

16 June 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Justice and interior ministers from the Group of Eight (G-8) leading industrialized economies are meeting today in Britain to discuss ways to stop drug trafficking, international terrorism, and child pornography.
Britain's top law enforcement official, Home Secretary Charles Clarke, on 15 June said he wants a discussion at the meeting in Sheffield, England, about establishing an international database that would allow law enforcement officials across the globe to share information that would help capture child abusers and rescue victims.

Clarke also said he wants a discussion on drug trafficking, saying "it is a big concern" that 87 percent of heroin and other narcotics worldwide come from Afghanistan despite international efforts.

The meeting of ministers from Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and Russia comes as G-8 member countries are preparing for a three-day summit that starts on 6 July at the Scottish resort of Gleneagles.
